Wheelchair users are not necessarily wheelchair bound

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society

Author: Hoenig, H., Pieper, C., Zolkewitz, M., Schenkman, M., Branch, L. G.
Year: 2002
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

This study looks at the patterns of wheelchair use in terms of location, whether wheelchair use in one location was related to wheelchair use in other location and factors associated with wheelchair use in different locations. The study concluded that personal factors, like using help to propel the wheelchair and environmental factors, like home adaptations to accomodate the wheelchair influenced wheelchair use. In addition, wheelchair use differed by location and users appeared to use their wheelchair selectively, depending on their physical needs and the constraints of their environment.
