This short article examines the various equity release schemes that have been available in the U.K. for the past 25 years and their potential to contribute to housing improvement. These schemes come in two main formats - mortgage and annuity schemes and home reversions. The most popular form, home income plans, take the form of mortgages which are used to buy life-long annuities. Home reversion plans involve selling the houses to investors but the renter retains occupancy rights for life.
