Walking the tight-rope: balancing independence and security in old age

Social Dynamics

Author: Frankental, S.
Year: 1979
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Life history data on 80 residents of Cape Town old age homes, together with participant observation & data from 160 survey questionnaires, are used to interpret the meaning of old age for the aged themselves. It is found that feelings of independence are associated with living in normal homes. Older people seek to maintain an image of themselves as independent, sometimes by putting down others. This concern is balanced by a concern for security, perceived as a feature of institutional residence.
