Abstract:

Argues that an external locus of control may adversely affect commitment to & participation in mental health treatment by seniors. Introduced here is the concept of using the therapeutic relationship to encourage internal control beliefs in elderly mental health clients, with the goal of promoting personal empowerment & improving the efficacy of therapy. A review of literature relevant to aging & locus of control is provided. The development of an external locus of control is explained by the theories of self psychology & the social breakdown syndrome.
