This paper seeks to stimulate debate on the use of universal housing design in the provision of social housing by the Queensland Department of Housing. It lists 7 principles of universal housing design: equitable use, flexibility in use, aiple and intuitive use, perceptible information, tolerance of error, low physical effort, size and space for approach and use. The paper briefly outlines the history of universal design in the Qld department of housing. Ageing and increased disability are major factors requiring a universal housing approach. The 1998 ABS Survey (Disability, Ageing and carers: summary tabels, Qld 4430.3.40.001.1998) found that 19.9% of the Queensalnd population (686,700 people) had a disability. Limited mobility rates as the single biggest diasability category in Queensland affecting 145,600 people. It argues that universal housing costs will decrease as it becomes a more regular practice plus lead to efficiencies in the management of housing stock.
