The Socio-Political Framing of Aging and Communication Research

Journal of Applied Communication Research

Author: Williams, A., Coupland, N.
Year: 1998
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

In a reflection on theoretical & methodological issues concerning the new wave of communication & aging research, it is suggested that research needs to (1) sustain a metatheoretical debate, (2) assess where research questions & core concepts derive from, & (3) evaluate where our research stands in relation to broader social priorities, tensions, & inequalities that focus on aging & later life. Current research enacts an antiagist ideology, but ageism itself is another undertheorized concept. Also, explicit strategies to help research impact socioeconomic policies & everyday practices are lacking.
