Abstract:

The aim of the symposium was to pursue the prospects and problems arising from the twentieth-first century which is known as the "silver century". A particular focus was the need to recognise and understand the new demographic paradigm of "the Third Age" and promote the concept that people are living longer, adn the period between retirement and dependence is expanding rapidly. Also discussed were the policy deficiencies, especially that which treats the Third and Fourth Ages are identical.
