The rural elderly: providers' perceptions of barriers to service delivery

Sociological Practice

Author: Bull, C. Neil, Bane, Share DeCroix

Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

A 1989 survey of 90+% of the State Units on Aging identified 5 domains that underlie barriers to the delivery of services to the rural elderly: isolation, economics, service availability, cultural & demographic factors, & funding, statutory, and governance restrictions. A systematic review of these themes led to the identification of 34 specific challenges. Such a schema is outlined to aid social service providers, researchers, & students in making sense of the problems faced by the rural elderly. The relative importance of these barriers was assessed in a second survey of 172 resource persons in the field of rural aging.
