Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to signs and symptoms of aging in humans. Various theories on the interacting factors exist. Premature aging syndromes, including progeria and Werner's and Cockayne's syndromes, have been studied in order to gain insight into the genetic basis of aging and establish the division between aging and age-related disease. No one disease can serve as an overall model for aging, which involves multiple gene loci.
