The Potential of the Performance Concept

Abstract:

The performance conceptdemands that user requirements be identified along with their concequences for the built environment. These must be expressed in a quantifiable form, capable of verification. To achieve this is neccessary to concentrate on only the most essential characteristics of the user group and to make specific statement about particular groups rather than to generalise. Where conflicting requirements occur for diifernt user groups, these should be resolved or at least accounted for. The statement of performance requirements involoves a break down of the building system into constituent parts for measurments. However, evaluation requires a synthesis of these parts if it is to provide a holistic of the picture of the building useful for design feedback. For this reason all aspects of the building must be considered simultaneously from a chosen viewpoint dictated by one of the user groups.
