The potential for 'smart home' systems in meeting the care needs of older persons and people with disabilities.

Senior's Housing Update

Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Smart homes have the potential to enable elderly and disabled people to lead independent lives in their homes. The end product of the CUSTODIAN project funded by the European Commission will be a software tool designed to enable its users to design smart homes that reflect the needs of the older people and people with disabilities. With the advent of the 'smart home', the range and nature of the services that the home provides can either be dictated by the manufacturers and suppliers of the technology or mediated by the care sector and the end users of the housing, to ensure that the technological solutions are tailored to the real needs of the people.
