The politics of aging: the geriatric imperative of the Department of Veterans Affairs

Journal of Aging & Social Policy

Author: Achenbaum, W. Andrew
Year: 1991
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Through its veterans' programs the federal government has long set the pace for meeting income security & health care needs of older Americans. Now, however the US Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is inadequately funded, policymakers are genuinely divided about what should be spent to care for aging veterans. Assessing various options, it is concluded that it makes sense to strenghten the DVA's internal capacity to meet its geriatric imperative.
