A symbolic interactionist perspective is used to examine the effects of institutionalization on residents of a Sydney, Australia, nursing home. The analysis suggests that much 'negative' behavior observed among patients results from the institutional structuring of a dependence role. Implications for long-term care of the aged in both community & institutional settings are discussed.
