The Myths of Old Age

New Society

Author: Laurance, J.
Year: 1988
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Government policies on issues of the elderly are said to be based more on rhetoric than fact. Primarily, it is unclear that society's burden will necessarily increase simply because more people are living longer. Changing prevalence of certain types of disease shows that aging does not automatically mean increased disability; the needs of the elderly, contrary to popular political belief, are not limitless. Pessimistic attitudes have self-fulfilling tendencies & push the elderly into either total care or no-care situations.
