The aging of the Jamaican population is examined from a socioeconomic perspective, using data from a combined retrospective review & cross-sectoral community survey of 1,329 persons, ages 60-97. Findings suggest that elderly persons continue to live in families to which they contribute in several ways. Sources of support include the family & informal systems; quality of support was not assessed. A gender difference was found in social & economic needs & possible solutions. Results suggest the need for a gender-specific approach to social & economic policy on aging & a life course approach for future generations of elderly. Research, including anthropological research, is essential to inform future policy.
