The elderly and the health care system: another perspective

The Milbank Quarterly

Author: Densen, P. M.
Year: 1987
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

The aging of the population & the introduction of new organizational structures for the delivery of health services, the realization of the importance of social support services as well as medical services in contributing to the quality of life, & the struggle to control costs all emphasize the importance of looking at how the elderly utilize the health care system as a whole. Here, a diagram is presented showing the annual progress of 100,000 elderly through the health care system. The benefits to be gained through the development & periodic review of such a diagram are discussed. It is argued that we can no longer afford to think of the parts of the health care system as discrete entities but must view the system as a whole. The statistical system must help to foster this change in perspective.
