Analyzes the evolution of services for the elderly in Singapore, illustrating the interface of historical circumstances, demography, & government policy. It is noted that, from a wholly welfare-oriented approach, the trend has been toward a more balanced developmental-cum-welfare approach since 1970. The necessity of initiating a centralized national council on aging to provide an integrated range of services for the fast-growing Singaporean elderly population is highlighted.
