The Consequences of Elderly Wives Caring for Disabled Husbands: Implications for Practice

Social Work

Author: Wilson, V.
Year: 1990
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

The mental health status & problems encountered by elderly wives functioning as primary caregivers for disabled husbands are investigated drawing on structured interview & questionnaire data collected from 188 such women selected from the files of the Office of Long Term Care Home Health Services Program. Findings indicate that, in spite of wives' low morale scores, their health status has a positive correlation with their coping abilities. It is concluded that the constant demand for care, the resultant physical & emotional strain, reduced social contact, & restricted finances contribute toward a major risk of clinical depression for elderly caregiving wives. Implications & recommendations for social work practice are discussed.
