The aging, income support programs, and economic well-being: A catholic perspective

Social Thought

Author: Ryle, E. J.
Year: 1985
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

The economic situation of the aging is discussed from the point of view of Catholic social thought as expressed in the social encyclicals, documents of Vatican II, etc. The U.S. may be facing a serious budgetary crisis, which will necessitate hard choices about health & income support programs. The basic sustenance needs of the poor must take precedence over lesser needs & rights of the middle class & upper class. Reductions in military spending, revising the tax reductions of the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981, & increasing employment can enable continuing support of the elderly.
