Projects examining the potential of information technology to provide health care information to elderly citizens are reviewed, & a new system called Healthcom is proposed, which, using a combination of telephone & computerized audiotext responses, should be a valuable source of information & reassurance for aging patients. Unlike other telephone & computer services that are impersonal or require an intermediary for communication, & thus are of limited use, Healthcom would provide older patients with access at their request to personally relevant information, supplemented by training & support.
