Abstract:

Explores how technology is transforming the lives of older adults. New products are reaching beyond the Internet's communication and entertainment features, promising to bolster independence for tomorrow's retirees while helping them fight the isolation and illness that can accompany aging. "Tele-home care" is at the forefront of technology benefiting older adults, with sophisticated monitoring systems now in hundreds of homes. Researchers are testing other innovations, from gentle lights for frail eyes to cars that extend driving years with voice and visual prompts. The Age Lab is testing handheld computers that wirelessly link older adults with transport and meal services, "digital Danskins" outfits with mechanized joints to aid motion, and lights that gradually brighten a path to the bathroom. Researchers also are customizing appliances for older adults, including refrigerators that generate a shopping list as supplies run low. A sidebar offers brief descriptions of 16 web sites that offer older adults information on finances, travel, health, and new activities.
