Techniques for evaluating three key environmental factors in stairway-related falls.

Proceedings of the 42nd Annual meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society

Author: Pauls, J.
Year: 1998
Type: Conference Paper

Abstract:

Given their prominent role as the leading product category associated with hospital-treated injuries recorded in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, stairway should be carefully evaluated with reference to three key environmental factors: step visibility, step geometry, and provision of functional handrails. Commonly used documentation techniques may fail to describe these adequately or even correctly. Three techniques, tested in fall investigations and safety demonstrations, are recommended: the perspective-distorting, step geometry, and the graspability.
