A recent study completed by the authors (Kendig H., Gardner, I. Brooke L. 1998) found that social isolation is a substantial and growing problem within the veteran community, affecting one in 5 Vietnam veterans and younger veterans. This is twice the rate of WW2 veterans, although the risk is increasing as they age. The fact that poor health is the most important predictor of social isolation has far-reaching implications for the way health professionals approach both prevention and management of illness and incapacity.
