Strategic planning for an ageing society

Abstract:

Presents a theoretical model of implementing social support systems to serve the needs of people ages 65 plus in the US. The support systems are designed to help older people with three basic needs - socialization, daily living, & assistance during illness or crisis - through both informal & formal support. The informal support system, described here as being the more important since it is the first line of support, is analyzed in terms of the nuclear family unit, support systems networks, & social interactions. The role of formal support systems, ie, governmental or voluntary, is also examined. It is argued that a relationship between the formal & informal systems needs to be established to best assist older persons & to possibly meet their needs without institutionalization.
