Stair lifts and vertical wheelchair lifts

British Journal of Therapy & Rehabilitation

Author: Beresford, S. A.
Year: 1998
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

In 1991 approximately one in six people were over 65 years of age and by 2021 nearly one in five people are expected to be over 65 years old (Family Policy Studies Centre, 1994). Older and disabled people often experience difficulties getting up and down stairs safely. A simple stair rail can improve safety on the stairs for some people, but for others with more severe handicaps this may not be enough. A stair lift or vertical wheelchair lift (through-floor lift) can provide a solution for a person who wishes to remain at home and use more than one floor in his/her house.
