The author describes how existing artificial intelligence techniques are directly applicable to solving the human interface problem of home automation products even when the `system intelligence' is widely distributed among different products sharing a common home network. It is pointed out that home automation products can use techniques from all areas of artificial intelligence: language processing, expert systems, pattern recognition, and learning.
