Societal aging and generational dependency relationships: problems of measurement and conceptualization

Research on Aging

Author: Adamchak, D. J., Freidmann, E. A.
Year: 1983
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

The current controversy over support for our rapidly aging population over the next 60 years & the use of "dependency ratios" that are central to the debate are assessed. The President's Commission on Pension Policy & the proposed change in receipt of full social security benefits from age 65 to 68 are critiqued. Labor force & society dependency ratios are projected to the year 2050 to demonstrate that demographic shifts will not significantly increase the total proportion of groups outside the productive components of the population. Implications of the findings are discussed.
