In response to the growing senior (ages 60+) population of Western Australia, the roles of the state & commonwealth governments in implementing social support programs that challenge ageism & promote independence, security, dignity, & activity for seniors are discussed. A profile of typical Western Australian seniors is presented, & contributions of seniors & challenges to stereotypes are explored. After a description of the commonwealth government's responsibilities to seniors - the Age Pension & Community Care Program - the efforts of the state government are examined, focusing on the Office of Seniors Interests, the National Seniors Assoc, Over Fifties Focus, & the Council on the Ageing. It is argued that, by encouraging senior independence & developing more positive attitudes toward seniors, they can live more active, fulfilling lives & continue to contribute to the community.
