Smart houses for older people: General considerations

International Journal of Technology & Aging

Author: Hiat, L. G.
Year: 1988
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Combines research literature on aging and environmental design with futurism and brainstorming to suggest possibilities for smart housing (SH) for the aging. SH is defined as homes where systems and appliances can command each other through advances in wiring and thereby demand less management. Advantages for the aging include aiding independence, offering security, and postponing insitutionalization. SH for the aging should anticipate features of the aging process, support the individual who wants to live at home, and add to general well-being.
