Slip and fall accidents - floor testing

Author: Goodwin, V. D.
Year: 1999
Type: Web Page

Abstract:

The author examines several contributing factors to slip and fall accidents and discusses the evaluation of slippery floors. Both the American Society for Testing and Materials standard ASTM D2047 and the Underwriters Laboratories standard UL 410 specify a method for testing under laboratory conditions the slip resistance of floor finishes but they are not meant for field testing of real floors.Since most slips occur when the heel slides out during a heel strike, there are two test machines that simulate the heel strike in ambulation - Slip Test Mark II and the English XL. These machines are used to determine the coeffiecient of friction of the floor surface.
