In light of congressional reforms in the welfare system, a politically active stance that links legislative policy & social work practice is advocated for social workers engaged in gerontology. Past conditions at the local & national level affecting policy & practice with older adults are reviewed, including the Social Security Act (1935), Older Americans Act (1965), Medicare, Medicaid, & mental health legislation. Transfer of services from the federal government to state & local communities & actions in response to attacks on services for older adults are addressed. It is argued that agencies must develop innovative programming, evaluate program effectiveness, & compete for funding.
