Serving the Sandwich Generation: Working with Adult Children of Aging Parents

Journal of Independent Social Work

Author: Smith, K. G.
Year: 1989
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Members of the "sandwich generation"-ie, adult children of aging parents-are increasingly seeking professional help to assist them in balancing the demands of caring for an aging parent & their own jobs & families. Independent social workers can provide effective & innovative services to the growing number of such caregivers. Here, one such service-an eight-week workshop-support class for adult children of aging parents-is described, with attention to the background & formation of the class, & the content & process of each session. Issues of class length, attendance, fees, & the impact of the class on a social worker's practice are also considered.
