Abstract:

This article contains the results of a series of surveys undertaken by the ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS). The article identifies problems involved in the delivery of support services to people with an intellectual disability, and people with a physical or sensory disability (and their carers) in the ACT. Issues addressed include: dinstitutionalisation, supported accommodation, non-government accommodation, the Calyan equity housing model, at home accommodation, nursing home accommodation, respite care services, support services, recrational opportunities, employment and vocational training opportunities, transport services, direct funding of the consumer, commercial sponsorship, case management, coordination of services, role of peak bodies, staffing issues, professionalisation in the disabilities sector and occupational health and safety issues.
