Rethinking the geography of ageing

Progress in Human Geography

Author: Harper, S., Laws, G.
Year: 1995
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Examines gerontological research undertaken by geographers, development within human geography appropriate for the study of aging, & the lack of collaboration between human & academic gerontology. It is found that the major epistemological frameworks used in the gerontology of geographers have been empiricist, positivist, & humanist approaches. Main research areas include: housing & age segregation, care, & the social construction of age. Also discussed are applications of social theory, eg, Marxian, feminist, & postmodern, in human geography to gerontology. It is argued that advances within geography offer new possibilities for geographers interested in aging & provide new approaches beneficial to gerontologists in other disciplines.
