Residential remodeling and universal design: making homes more comfortable and accessible.

Author: NAHB Research Center,
Year: 1996
Type: Report

Abstract:

Universal features in homes make sense. Universally designed products, buidling features, and spacial techniques help people function more independently regardless of age, size, stature or ability. Many universal design features can be added to a home during a home remodelling or rehabilitation project at little or no extra cost. Addition of these features will improve the home for its residents now and in the future as well as increase its marketability. This report provides technical guidance on selecting and installing universal features during typical remodelling or rehabilitation projects and suggests products and designs conceived to create comfortable, functional environments for everyone. The authors recommend that homeowners review federal, state and local accessibility standards and codes although compliance with accessibility standards is not required in private homes.
