This chapter suggests several important issues in architectural design related to human experience and behaviour that have been relatively ignored in the past but should play a greater role in future design processes. Issues in planning and creating a lifespace are discussed in the context of group spaces, private spaces, support spaces, energy use and the floor plan. The recommendations presented represent ideals and it is unlikely that many people will be able to occupy a residence that meets all of the criteria suggested. Ultimately the choice of a residence will have to be based on the needs and resources of the specific individual or group and tradeoffs will be inevitable.
