The presentation reviews 3 main areas of research conducted at the ANU and La Trobe University over the 1980s and 1990s. First it focuses on the Ageing in the Family project carried out in the early and mid 1980s. The second area concerns community services and the third focuses on health status and health promotion. All of these research programs have had a strong bearing on the themes of independnce and burden. The research findings have been very positive and supportive of progressive policy directions. These include the Healthy Ageing Strategy and the National Stratgey for an Ageing Australia.
