Abstract:

This paper outlines the history of gerontology research and overseas developments, the scope of basic and applied studies in Australia, and considerations in setting up studies of ageing and older people. The dicussion also includes central concepts and methods in ageing studies and their potential shortcomings in addressing different kinds of research questions. The chapter concludes by emphasising the values of studies that use multiple methods and perspectives to produce an integrated body of knowledge in gerontology.
