Population projections

Author: Australia Dept of Immigration and Citizenship,
Year: 2010
Type: Web Page

Abstract:

Based on assumptions about Australia's future fertility, life expectancy and net overseas migration, Australia's population is projected to reach between 25 million and 27 million by 2050, remaining relatively stable to the end of the century. Population projections for Australia show that the ageing of our population will continue. Net overseas migration will influence the future size of the population. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has projected that by between 2003 and 2046 natural increase will fall below zero. Beyond this point only net overseas migration will contribute to population growth and subsequently to achieving a stable level of population.
