Population aging and the maintenance of social support systems

Canadian Journal on Aging/La Revue Canadienne du Vieillissement

Author: Denton, F. T., Spencer, B. G.
Year: 1997
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

As the baby boom generation grows old, the costs of maintaining existing social support systems will rise, & the ability or willingness to sustain those systems has been called into question. Here, issues related broadly to population aging in Canada & the associated social costs, including the costs of public services, are discussed. It is concluded that, while population-related cost increases should be expected, & reallocations of resources required, the overall increases should be of manageable proportions.
