A review essay on International Perspectives on Aging: Population and Policy Challenges (Binstock, Robert H., Chew, Wing-Sun, & Shultz, James H. Eds , UN Fund for Populations Activities, Policy Development Studies, 1982). The book contains chapters on: the aging of populations; family support for the aged; income, employment, & retirement; health care needs; living environments; & social service needs & policies. The consensus of the volume is that developing nations will soon face significant social problems resulting from increases in the aged population. However, the socialist countries & Japan offer alternatives to the model of the industrialized West to aid developing countries in resolving these problems.
