The association of the home with notions of retired leisure in New Zealand was examined through in-depth interview of 22 Pakeha (European) residents of Palmerston North, a provincial North Island city. Though North American researchers point to the emergence of elderly lifestyles grounded in consumption practices of leisure, analysis here revealed a different notion of active retirement experience that emphasizes involvement in productive rather than recreational or leisure activities. This notion allows the New Zealand elderly to forge identities that contest the representation of aging as grounded in inactivity, dependence, & withdrawal from public life.
