Abstract:

By the year 2030 the elderly are expected to comprise 17% of our population. These older adults with their complex health problems place a tremendous burden on the nursing care system in our institutions. Clinical nurse specialists are called upon to recommend appropriate nursing interventions designed to deal with the unique needs of older clients. Clinical nursing research is necessary to identify such interventions. The special needs of the elderly must be accommodated in the design of the research. In this paper the problems encountered in planning clinical nursing research with the elderly are discussed. Suggestions are made throughout the paper for planning nursing research which will overcome or accomodate the unique characteristics of the elderly.
