Placing elderly persons with psychiatric impairments in residential care homes

Adult Residential Care Journal

Author: Mosher-Ashley, P. M., Bogen, H., Ates, E. F., Franklin, G.
Year: 1996
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Psychiatric-impaired elderly persons with family supports tend not to be in contact with mental health services, & appear to be less likely to receive traditional aging services as most elder services are not designed to handle the behavioral problems associated with chronic mental illness. In many cases, the disabilities incurred by psychiatrically impaired adults are not sufficiently severe to warrant nursing home care. It is shown here how a case manager & placement worker can assess an elderly person's suitability for two types of placement & ease the transition into adult foster care or proprietary home.
