Philosophical considerations in programming for the older adult

Activities, Adaptation & Aging

Author: Harvey, L.
Year: 1982
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

A review of philosophical considerations underlying program planning for the older adult. A brief description of the present state of provision is presented emphasizing the diversional, temporary nature of these services. A human resource accounting model is used to critique the lack of a sound philosophy behind programs in the aging industry. An alternate philosophy, based on the existential school of thought, is offered, founded on the notion of life review as an essential task in the last stages of life. Focus is on motivating the planner to examine the philosophical underpinnings of their programs for the older adult & to determine if the existence of these programs can be justified.
