International Sociological Association paper

Author: Tout, K.
Year: 1990
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Myths regarding the process of aging, the status of the elderly in developing societies, & the traditional caring role of the extended family are examined, & related to observed realities using demographic forecasts of United Nations agencies & sociological data from HelpAge International. Regions & countries & districts within countries are compared in terms of longevity, care services available, & traditional cultural attitudes. Surveys, studies, innovative practices, & community responses to the aging problem in a number of developing countries are explored using HelpAge files, international conference reports, & personal observations of aging programs in the Third World over a 34-year period. Offers some general solutions to the aging issue as it develops into a world crisis.
