This first chapter provides an outline of the chapters in the book and introduces the primary concepts and research approaches in the study of support provided to and received by older people. Central attention is given to the memebership of personal networks and the kinds of support that flow through them. These networks are a product of the individual's personal atrributes (status group, life history, life transitions) and result in the individual's quality of life (adequacy of support, morale, relationship satisfaction).
