Opening New Spaces: Aging and the Millennium

Journal of Aging & Social Policy

Author: Holstein, M.
Year: 1998
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Discusses the concept of justice as it relates to critical gerontology & age-related policy planning. The notion of scientific objectivity as applied to the social sciences is critiqued, & it is argued that gerontological research & policy planning should involve a normative component. Justice as it relates to needs assessment is not limited to a distributional pattern; it also requires a just context for the decision-making process. It is concluded that, by incorporating reflexivity & a normative element, critical gerontology will be better able to radically challenge & change the status quo.
