Older Persons with Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities

Journal of Gerontological Social Work

Author: Parkinson, C. B., Howard, M.
Year: 1996
Type: Journal Article

Abstract:

Discusses the relatively new but growing population of older persons with mental retardation/developmental disabilities & the concomitant service needs & delivery issues. In this context, the development of the Council of Aging/Developmental Disabilities of Greater New York City sheds light on the process by which two service systems can develop the necessary linkages & confidence in each other to jointly serve a special population. It is argued that the Council has succeeded through patience, by being housed in a supportive environment, research & training. It is argued that such a systems linkage is not only possible, but highly advantageous to the institutions involved.
