Nursing home dementia care units:: providing a continuum of care rather than aging in place

Journal of Gerontological Nursing

Abstract:

To maintain the therapeutic milieu on Special Care Units for people with dementia, admission and discharge criteria are often developed. Experience at one facility over 24 months revealed frequent intra-institutional transfers of residents from the DSCU. The effects of frequent intra-institutional moves in a nursing home on the residents, caregivers, and family members must be questioned. There is a need to determine better predictors of who will benefit from the activity-based DSCUs so that residents who are most likely to benefit will be placed on the unit, and lengths of stay on the units will increase.
